Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that his team would explore the possibility to bring Apple's CarPlay into its electric cars. However, a real-world update has yet to occur.

Apple's car connectivity protocol uses Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth, which Tesla cars already offer.

It appears, however, that you can port CarPlay into a Tesla car if your Raspberry Pi board is well-kept.

"Tesla Android", which introduced CarPlay to a Tesla Model 3 by using a custom build Android 12 on a Raspberry Pi and a connected LTE modem.

Official website lists all hardware requirements. This includes a Raspberry Pi 4 with at minimum 4 gigs RAM to run Android.

Another Raspberry Pi (at minimum version 3) boots Linux to handle networking. It also has an HDMI capture module and an LTE modem.

You can also go wireless with optional kit, and a radiator for cooling is recommended.

Although the components are fairly easy to find and relatively affordable, it is not recommended that you mess with the software.

You can download the Tesla Android Project source code on GitHub. Next, install ADB and flash a custom image onto an SD card.

After the primary Raspberry Pi 4 board is connected to the SD card and the bootloader appears, users will need to manually verify pairing by using a fastboot command.

After extracting & executing a set of commands, the driver update process will be completed. The entire script will then flash on the screen and Android Auto setup will appear

Users will need to connect using the Ethernet port.

Next, you will need to boot up the Linux interface of the Raspberry Pi board. This takes a while.

After the CarPlay interface is successfully installed, some users may experience lag. This can be fixed by overclocking their Raspberry Pi module running Android.

If they need audio navigation assistance, users will have to give up mic support for calls.

This developer has committed to fixing some limitations in future builds the Tesla Android Project Kit, but until Tesla releases official support via a software upgrade, this may be the best option.
